From food waste to biodiversity, pupils put sustainability into action
May 8, 2026

Plant sales, bird feeders, endangered species and plenty of thoughtful ideas along the way. Sustainability Week put environmental action at the centre of school life - led by pupils, powered by small changes.

Sustainability Week saw pupils across the school take part in a programme of environmental initiatives designed to encourage practical, everyday approaches to sustainable living. Led by pupil Enterprise Representatives, the week combined food waste awareness, recycling projects and biodiversity education with student-led activities aimed at bringing environmental responsibility into school life.

Enterprise Rep Adithyan in Year 8 reflects on the week:

Sustainability Week brought our school community together through a range of activities focused on the environment and the small changes we can all make in everyday life. We began with Meatless Monday, encouraging students to think about the impact of their food choices by trying a variety of plant-based options. It was great to see so many pupils getting involved and showing how much they care about protecting the planet for the future.

The week continued with Think Before You Throw Tuesday, where students combined creativity with conservation by turning plastic bottles into bird feeders and donating second-hand toys for the upcoming summer tombola. The activities highlighted the importance of reusing and recycling, and how everyday items can be given a new purpose instead of being thrown away.

On Waste less Wednesday, the focus shifted to mindful consumption, with a sticker system used to celebrate pupils who finished their lunches without leftovers. The initiative encouraged everyone to think carefully about food waste and only take what they needed.

Thursday marked Endangered Species Day with a special screening of The Lorax. As students watched with popcorn in hand, the film’s message about caring for the environment clearly resonated across the school community.

Go Green Friday saw the school filled with green mufti as students celebrated the final day of Sustainability Week. During assembly, pupils met Charlie the owl and the endangered Dryococelus australis (Lord Howe Island stick insect), bringing the importance of biodiversity to life in a memorable way. The week also included a successful plant sale led by Aditya K in Year 6, with many students taking home plants to care for themselves. Overall, Sustainability Week was a reminder that small actions, when taken together, can make a meaningful difference.

Miss Odedra, Head of Enterprise, said: “Sustainability Week showed just how engaged and thoughtful our pupils are when it comes to environmental responsibility. From recycling projects to biodiversity activities, the week reflected a genuine willingness across the school community to make small changes that can have a lasting impact.”
