Our annual Maths DJ assembly returned this term, bringing together live mixing and a simple message: maths is everywhere - including in music.
DJing is rich in mathematical thinking. Tempo is measured in beats per minute, transitions rely on timing and counting bars, and mixing requires careful control of levels and frequencies. Year 7 pupil Leopold demonstrated the maths behind DJing live, keeping tracks in time and timing transitions precisely, while Mr Edward Matthews, Head of Maths, explained how beats per minute (BPM) and the number 27 shape the rhythm and feel of music.
Mr Matthews said: “DJing is a brilliant example of maths in action, from timing, to structure and precision, and it’s a great way to show pupils those connections beyond the classroom. Pupils are encouraged to pursue their interests, and we create the space and support to help them grow.”
The assembly is one of several ways the department celebrates those interests and shows where mathematical thinking appears in everyday life.
A weekly DJ club now runs on Wednesdays, giving pupils a regular space to practise and develop the precision and timing that sit at the heart of both DJing and maths.
