Geography

The subject of Geography at the Under School aims to broaden a pupil's appreciation of the world, both with regards to physical landform creation and economic and social processes. In the early years, the subject focuses upon individual case studies, for example Nation States, rainforest exploration, and polar investigation. By Year 5, the subject broadens and pupils are encouraged to form links and develop an awareness of national and global issues. Years 6 and 7 follow the prescribed Common Entrance syllabus, but particular emphasis is placed upon explanation of processes. Homeworks are fun and investigative, with the aim of fostering a pupil's attention to detail and developing useful life skills such as the ability to analyse Ordnance Survey maps three-dimensionally.

In Year 8, the Common Entrance syllabus follows the prescribed route, once again with emphasis upon case studies and developing a 'bank' of background knowledge. The boys are given the opportunity to undertake fieldwork in the Surrey Hills, and undertake a 1000-word project based on a study of a local river. The Scholarship candidates face new challenges in the form of essay development. They are constantly offered the opportunity to explain events and offer insights. In geography, there is very often no right or wrong answer; what the Under School fosters is the opportunity to explain and look forward to the future with an open mind.
